Prevent users from installing DBC program updates
There is a user preference that will automatically check for an update when DBC is started.
If an update is available, the user will be prompted to download and install the update.
By default, this preference is turned off. Meaning, there is no automatic check.
But the user can still perform the update function manually from the Help menu.
Preventing users from updating DBC
You can prevent DBC updates by:
- Write-protecting the entire DBC installation - User data does not have to located in the same directory as the DBC program.
Note, the sample and/or tutorial directories contain files the user may want to modify or copy.
- Deleting the update program - iupdate.exe is the update program. No update can be installed without iupdate.exe.
If you choose to delete iupdate.exe, save a copy of iupdate to install future updates.
- Blocking updates.xml - The file https://www.dbcinc.com/xml/update.xml informs DBC programs when an update is available.
Using a firewall or router to block updates.xml may cause the DBC program to generate an error message.
Uncheck the option to automatically check for updates.
Installing updates by IT department
If users cannot install updates on their own, the IT department will have to install the DBC updates.
The most straightforward options are:
- Use the setup program - Download the updated setup program; the URL and Product Key never change.
The URL and Product Key are available upon request.
When an update is available, the setup program is rebuilt to create an installation from scratch.
Install to a new directory or "repair" (overwrite) an existing installation. Then delete iupdate.exe.
- Use the update program - Update an existing DBC installation that is not write-protected.
- Make sure the DBC installation is not write protected.
- Download the .upd file from the website. The .upd file does not have to be saved to the same directory as the DBC executable file.
- Run iupdate.exe. iupdate.exe must be in the same directory as the DBC executable file.
Note, you should have previously saved a copy of iupdate.exe.
- You will be prompted to open a file, select the.upd file you downloaded in step 2. This will update the DBC directory and/or the samples and/or tutorial directories.
- Delete iupdate.exe and/or iupdate2.exe. Note, iupdate.exe and/or iupdate2.exe may be included with every .upd file so they have to be deleted after the update is installed.
If the update program determines a file is in use, it will automatically abort and restore the previous installation.
In all cases, the DBC program cannot be updated (i.e. overwritten) when it is running.
E-mail dbcsupport@sscinc.com to be added to the update notification e-mail list. When an update is available, you will receive an notice with instructions and a copy of the readme notes.
